Damn DC
You thought I evolved?
I still can’t stand DC sports. There, I said it.
Some background: I grew up in Maryland surrounded by fans of all teams DC (the future Washington Football Team, the Nationals starting in 2005, the Capitals and the Wizards).
Aside from an early-to-mid 2000s dalliance with the Gilbert Arenas-led Wizards, I rooted against all teams DC, instead following my family lineage and rooting for New York-area teams.
I wouldn’t call it a hardship because A) it’s just sports (gasp!) and B) DC sports teams were notoriously bad.
Before the Capitals won a title in 2018 and the Nats in 2019, no DC team had made a conference finals since 1998. Meanwhile, my NFL team — the New York Giants — won a couple titles.
That aside, my disdain for DC sports continues on, which brings us to Sunday’s mega-disappointing sports day for DC-hating, NY-loving fans.
First (and less importantly), the 1-5 Wizards beat the Kevin Durant/Kyrie Irving-led Nets by one point.
Then, at night, I needed a Washington Football team loss to keep the Giants’ season alive. Instead, the Eagles decided to tank, and WFT won. No playoffs for my beloved 6-10 G-Men.
If I was still in high school, I’d complain on here about how unfair the day was.
How dare the Wizards decide to win? Who gave the Washington Football Team permission to play a below-average game and make the playoffs?
But I’m 29 and haven’t been in high school in 12 years. My writing has evolved … to me choosing to complain in a less explicit way. A more professional way.
Some days the results don’t go your way. You’re stuck watching a 7-9 rival celebrate a playoff berth.
And that’s OK.
Well, it’s not OK, but that sounded like the right thing to say.
